General Anesthesia
In reality, we recognize that a few people feel extreme anxiety and are frightened about their visits to the dentist. If you fall into this description, or if you have various dental work that needs to be completed in one visit, you probably want to gain more information about sedation dentistry or “sleep dentistry” which is completed under general anesthesia. Subject to your individual concerns and requirements, Britannia Dental Care may prescribe an oral sedative, or IV (intravenous) sedation, they are both safe and effective.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Should you undergo any dental procedures under oral sedation, Britannia Dental Care will prescribe an oral sedative that should be taken before your appointment, this will help you feel calm once you take a seat in the examination room. Throughout the appointment, you may also be given laughing gas to heighten the calming reaction of the oral sedative. Each time you visit our office, we will make sure that you feel relaxed throughout the entire appointment, and we will oversee your vital signs to ensure that we make modifications as needed.
IV Conscious Sedation
For dental procedures completed under intravenous or IV conscious sedation, Britannia Dental Care will also provide a strong sedative through an IV, this means that your mood will be absolutely relaxed and calm during your visit; generally you will not recall anything about the procedure once it is completed. You will be in an obscure state at this point, you will be able to acknowledge requests and answer questions – for example, you’ll be able to open your mouth wider if the dentist needs you to, or verbally communicate with the dentist – however you will be in an absolutely relaxed state. If you would like to obtain IV conscious sedation, you will need to have a friend or family member accompany you to the appointment, you will also need to abstain from any activities until the anesthesia has worn off.
