How To Maintain Healthy Teeth For Life

Want to preserve your healthy, beautiful smile for a lifetime? Britannia Dental Care shares six simple tips on how to maintain healthy teeth for life.

6 month dentist visits help keep teeth healthy for a lifetime

Maintaining the health of your teeth is a worthwhile investment. Natural teeth help preserve the structure of your mouth and jaw, allowing you to continue chewing normally. Teeth also aid in speech by helping form words by controlling airflow out of the mouth. Most importantly, your teeth help you smile! A smile is a sign of all positive things in life, of friendship, happiness, warmth. Your smile is the first thing people notice about you, and the last thing they remember. Below, Team Britannia shares six helpful tips to ensure your teeth last a lifetime!

1. Start Good Habits Early

The Canadian Dental Association recommends children visit a dentist once the first tooth appears, usually around six months of age. This visit introduces the child to the ambiance of a dental clinic, and allows the dentist to assess their teeth, and build a relationship with your child. Ensuring your child feels comfortable at a dental office is our priority, as biannual visits are recommended for a healthy smile. As another protective measure, once the child’s permanent molars (back teeth) come in, we can apply fissure sealants. These thin coatings are applied to the hard to clean, deep grooves in the molars to reduce the formation of cavities.

2. Brushing Twice Is Nice

Almost all dental complications can be prevented with good oral hygiene. Taking a few minutes to brush and floss daily can help you maintain a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. It is recommended to brush for two minutes, first thing in the morning, and last thing at night. We recommend flossing once daily as well, to ensure all surfaces of your teeth get cleaned. If you have braces, bridges or other dental prostheses, there are specially designed toothbrushes and tools available to make cleaning more efficient. Ask our team for some samples at your next visit!

3. Use Fluoride

Use toothpastes and mouthwashes that contain fluoride to protect your teeth. Fluoride strengthens the tooth’s enamel, making it less susceptible to cavities. This concentrated application of fluoride, along with frequent consumption of fluoridated water, will maximize the strength of your teeth.

4. Guard Your Smile

While sports and recreational activities are important for our health, they can cause damage to teeth. Our team can make custom-fitted mouthguards for you to enjoy these activities without having to worry about your pearly whites.guard your teeth with a custom made mouthguard from Britannia Dental MississaugaSimilarly, grinding your teeth can pose a threat to your smile. To combat the wear and tear grinding causes, we can make custom-fitted nightguards for you.

Using our iTero digital scanner, we will be able to take a 3D scan of your teeth to fabricate the perfect mouthguard or nightguard for you.

5. Be Sugar Smart

Bacteria in the mouth can break down simple sugars to produce acids that can destroy the tooth structure, leading to cavities. Reducing your consumption of sugary foods and drinks will not only help your oral health, but your general health as well. Try to consume sugary drinks through a straw, and during mealtimes to lessen the impact of an ‘acid-attack’. We recommend rinsing the mouth with water afterwards to wash away any remaining sugary particles.

6. Visit The Dentist Regularly

We recommend visiting for a dental cleaning and check-up every 6 months. These regular visits constitute of thorough plaque-removal by a hygienist. Along with polishing of the teeth, and fluoride application to strengthen the teeth. The dentist will then assess your teeth for any signs of tooth decay, oral cancer, wear from teeth grinding, gum disease, and more. Early detection of these problems is vital in maintaining a healthy smile.

At Britannia Dental Care, we believe prevention is better than cure. When dental cleanings and checkups are performed at the recommended time interval, we can reduce:

  • Your risk of cavities: Professional dental cleanings remove any built-up plaque and tartar which are the cause of cavities.
  • The occurrence of bad breath: Keeping your mouth fresh by regular at-home oral hygiene, and thorough dental cleanings can prevent bad breath.
  • Your risk of gum disease: Accumulated plaque and tartar can also damage the gums. According to Canadian Dental Association, “48% of Canadians who haven’t seen a dentist in the past year have gum disease.”
  • The need for more invasive treatment: If dental problems are undetected, and untreated, they progressively require more invasive treatment. For instance, if a cavity that can be treated with a filling, is left undetected, it can progress into a root canal infection, requiring root canal treatment and a dental crown.
  • Your overall dental expenses: Cavities and gum disease require procedures such as fillings and periodontal care. Early tooth loss due to gum disease will require tooth replacement procedures such as dental bridges and implants. By attending routinely, you can prevent the need for these procedures.
